5 Minutes with… Glenn Thomas

What are your main responsibilities?

I look after a team of engineers and am responsible for the service and small works delivery across Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. We have a mix within the team from multi-skilled to specialist engineers, who can work on complex CNI (Critical National Infrastructure) projects.

We also support fire extinguisher maintenance in remote areas of Scotland, such as Wick, the Borders, the Outer Hebrides and Shetland.

What is your main objective within this role?

My primary objective is to foster a collaborative and high-performing service team that consistently delivers quality results. This factors in taking care of our engineers’ well-being, ensuring they’re trained appropriately for their role, and maintaining a strong customer-centric focus.

On any given day you’ll find me involved with a wide range of tasks, including not only supervising completed work and performance reviews but also prioritising the welfare of our staff, actively monitoring health and safety, addressing customer enquiries and organising team and customer meetings.

The company has rigorous safety standards to uphold and I work with the engineers to ensure they’re carrying out the work whilst safeguarding themselves and others – all the time delivering on Marlowe’s core values.

What jobs did you do prior to joining us? What prepared you for your role here?

I previously worked as an Installation and Service Engineer at another fire and security company, where I advanced from an apprentice role to becoming an Engineer, before transitioning into a management position. I’ve worked in management for the past 8 years.

I came to Marlowe with transferable skills, but I’ve also honed and developed my management skills through the progression opportunities that have been available to me here.

What’s the best thing about working at Marlowe Fire & Security?

I’ve benefitted from significant investment in my development since joining the company.
I’ve completed the ILM Level 5 in Leadership & Management, which was a two year course, and all managers have completed IOSH Managing Safely As Standard. I’m about to embark on NEBOSH course to further enhance my understanding.

The training and investment provided to myself and the wider team help us to continually develop and enhance the experience we have not only as valued employees but the experience we provide to our customers.

I truly believe that we can deliver on all services from cradle to grave.

What has been the highlight of your career at Marlowe Fire & Security over the years?

Since 2013, I have progressed up the ranks from Engineer to Manager. This path has involved overseeing operations in Scotland, then both Scotland and Newcastle, and now Scotland, NI, and ROI. The role has been both challenging and immensely rewarding, as it entails the responsibility of spearheading change and promoting best practices.

Are you working on any special projects?

I have recently completed the mobilisation of a new contract with a utility firm. This involved the implementation of a comprehensive planned maintenance structure, training requirements, and the ongoing development of this contract.

What has been your greatest personal achievement?

Shooting 69 (-1) at my local golf course – a feat that probably won’t be repeated! 😊

What makes you most proud of your team/company?

Witnessing the growth of the company makes me proud. I am also responsible for the recruitment and development of the team, so it’s great to see engineers step up to the challenge and help create solutions for our customers’ problems.
